Frustration...

Things don't always go as planned...dammit!

As you may remember...
I was so excited to work on this still life painting a few weeks ago...
transforming it into an abstract painting,  while keeping a few of the elements I love.

This was my plan...and no, I don't usually have a plan...I just go for it.
But this time, because it was a painting I had attachment to,
I wanted to figure it out before I got started.

Once my plan was in place,
I started layering papers and laying on paint.

The lemons and the tulips where what I really wanted to save in this painting.

I took it into class to work on and decided to eliminate a few items in the painting.
I also introduced purple (not a color I use often)...I was liking the direction it was going in.

After that it seems a blur...a blur of adding and subtracting, finding the right colors,
then changing those colors...the more I worked on it, the more frustrated I got!

I thought maybe turquoise would help...

...only to cover that up with a butterscotch color...and then cover that up with pale yellow.

Finally...the look of frustration.

So...in the end...or the middle...it's time to walk away...give it a rest.
I have a feeling it will come to me, the fix, the perfect solution to make this painting work...
in time to hang for the next show on Septmeber 22nd at...

I'll be sure to post the outcome...when there finally is one!

I know we all have this experience, with whatever project we happen to be working on.
What do you do in this case?

  1. Step away from the canvas! Take a breather, flip through some art books or any mags that have great photos, go to a museum, watch a movie - anything to get some space between you and the frustration, er, painting. I guarantee that you’ll be re-inspired and ready to charge ahead!
I loved that painting. The lemons & are fantastic! Good luck! Hey! How about playing around on your iPad with it, you can work out some of those issues or doodle on a new drawing? I know you’ll rock it!

  2. Great ideas! You Doodle app helped me out ...I was able to try something risky to see how I liked it, then share that with my mentor and decide...nope that's not the answer. Low risk trial gave me the opportunity to look at the painting in a new light and it was a few subtrations, a few additions and I now love it. It's titled, ready to be framed and going into the next show at Ashton Gallery for the Home and Harvest show. Thanks for the great ideas!
