Making Changes

Is a piece of art really ever finished?

I find the more I paint, the more pieces I come across that could use a little freshening up.
The piece above was one of those very paintings.

It started out as a long, vertical piece, painted on a piece of loose canvas,
that hung like a tapestry.
It was part of a show in the mentors group at Ashton Gallery in September of 2019.

I think we all had fun doing these pieces...same size, same surface...
with a different artists vision on each one.

But...once the show was over, then what?

If your piece didn't sell...you got to have a painting on a loose piece of canvas!  I decided to change mine up by cutting it into several canvases, backing them onto boards and framing as a completely new piece of art.

As you've seen above, and here below...I took the canvas, a matte knife...
and cut a section out.  It was the part I liked the best, though once it was on its own without
the rest of the painting to back it up...was it enough?

 I thought, maybe not!
So I started playing around with color, more collaged papers and paint...I wanted to make this painting stand on its own, without its bottom half.  Several more layers of background, building up color and adding in more collaged papers...as in the day lilies that were from a botanical book.  I cut them out, glued them down, then went over each one with paint to make it my own!

I love these lilies, to me they made the painting come to life.
I titled this one...
"Bursting With love"
(notice the tissue paper with love printed on it)

This piece will be going into the RED show at Ashton Gallery
(I'm entering it, not guarantee it'll get in)...
but one must try to bring their art out into the open by entering shows.
Wish me luck.
