Focusing In...

Going from mid start to finish...

It's been a really busy week and it's Friday night...
the night I usually write my blog so it lands in your inbox on Saturday morning.

I was wondering why I had time on my hands tonight...and then I remembered...
I have to write my blog!!!

So keeping it simple, I thought I'd write about one of my creative projects this week...
covering a canvas with papers and then painting something out of it.

I'm starting photos mid way as I forgot to get photos of the beginning paper layers...
though the 30"x40" canvas was base painted gray and covered with printed papers...
with not real plan on where it was going.

I mixed up a pale gray with a touch of sap green and started negative painting
a vase of flowers...one of my favorite ways to paint flowers.
A few of the papers had flowers printed on them...
though eventually I painted them out with a simpler shaped flower.

It's hard for me to cover my favorite papers up, though I have to remember...
not everything can be important...so cover them I did.

I didn't need to define all the flowers...
the large pink flowers are just the papers peeking through the gray paint.
I did go in and do a little mark making to even out the design,
added in a few outlined flowers,
and I'm calling this piece done.

I'll be teaching a master class at Art On 30th in late November
on adding papers to your painting to create texture and interest...
the class is sold out with a waiting list!
I'm pretty excited about that...and better start getting my class plan ready!

If your not doing anything this weekend...
try getting your layers down and start painting!

Enjoy

  1. Its wonderful to see the process...especially the idea of negative painting and I really like how the papers peek through in places...it gives the painting depth and interest. Thanks for sharing!
