Moving into 2020...

    GOALS...
that came from taking one class!
aim, ambition, aspiration, attainment, design, dream, idea, intent, intention, mission, objective, plan, purpose, target

In last week's post, as the year was winding down, I shared some ah-ha's in my life as an artist in 2019.  But let me first point out that all of these goals only came to be after stepping out of my home studio, my comfort zone, and taking one abstract painting class...that I had to drive 30 minutes, in traffic to get to! My arm was twisted by friends who wanted to take the class...so I reluctantly went along for the ride.

Exactly two years later...I've embraced abstract work and my art has completely changed and flourished,  I'm teaching three mixed media classes, I take classes, have my own studio outside the home and was welcomed into wonderful mentored group of artists...I found my art community!
And all it took was getting out to that one class!

This week the mentor art group was prompted to think about what's important to us by our mentor Kate Ashton...the prefect topic for our January 2nd meeting that got us all  thinking about and sharing our goals.  Kate made a list on the board and asked each of us to define what was most important to us regarding our art in this new year.  We could only pick one from the list...
• live the life of an artist
• sell your art
• become a better artist
• change your style
• recognition
• re-organize

I feel I've always lived my life as an artist, and because I do challenge myself to grow as an artist most days, I chose the topic of selling my art as the most important thing to me in 2020.  Now that I've defined what I want, I'll be taking some time to investigate what that looks like and the steps I need to include into my life as an artist to make that happen.

When I look at artist goal lists online, I'm happy to see I've already completed many of the steps to get to where I want to be. So rather than write a long list of lofty goals, quickly, before the clock struck 12 on January one, I'm taking thoughtful time to think about what's important and will have the most impact on my art and art business.

Knowing Exactly what you'll gain from reaching your goal is a strong motivator.

Here's what I have so far...
    art goals
respond to trends of what people are buying
create a series (or two) of artwork based on the most positive feedback
make regular trips to other galleries/museums/art studios to stay inspired

    art business goals
get a better camera for professional photos
    work on artist statement
get all art inventoried on Artist Archive
    keep website updated
set up art store on website
find another avenue to sell art online
    check out art licensing possibilities
build a stronger social media community
price artwork according to my artistic progress

Goal setting tips...
  • •Put your goals in writing
  • •Break down complicated plans into manageable chunks
  • •Be specific about what has to be accomplished
  • •Learn what you need to learn
  • •Visualize yourself having achieved each of your goals
  • •Get organized
And most importantly...
TAKE THAT CLASS!
That class you've been wanting to take and putting off for one reason or another...
whether it be abstract, mixed media, traditional drawing and painting, classes or workshops...

Get out and surround yourself with other artist who are also creating art
and being inspired by teachers and students alike.

You will thank yourself and be that much further along in your art and your future...
