Quickie Stencil Tutorial

A quick, hopefully helpful,
tip on adding stenciling to your art work.

As a mixed media artist
(and former faux finish & decorative artist)
I add stencils to my artwork quite often.

I feel it adds a nice design element to my work, sometimes as part of the main structure
and others as a finishing touch.

In this larger 24" x 48" piece, the stenciled letters add a strong focal to the design.

In this piece I used the same letters, along with circles that were done as a stencil relief
with gel medium for dimension.

I very often use letters in my work...
sometimes to spell things out, as in the broken up word "FLO WER" on the left...
other times to add a little interest, as in both pieces.

Here's a clip from my Mixed Media Monday class this week,
talking about how NOT to stencil.

And then a short video on a better way to do it, without paint bleeding under the stencil.

Hope you find this helpful and useful in your own artwork...
and if you aren't using stencils in your work...maybe now,  you'll want to give it a go!

  1. Thanks for the video -- good tips! Also reminded me that I have a stencil I want to incorporate in the next project I'm starting.
