Cold Wax Collage

Disclaimer:
I've just started to play with cold wax as an art medium in collage...
I've never used it before.
These are my very first attempts with cold wax...
I'm just learning and thought you might like to join me.

I found this can of Gamblin cold wax in my studio the other day,
not really sure why I bought it in the first place.
I think I was interested in encaustic art and this was a good
jumping off spot...so I gave it a try this week.

I didn't find much information online regarding cold wax,
mostly oil painting with it and one or two videos on collage and mixed media.
One source was Sharyn Binam's list of
a good starting point.

A few things I liked about working with cold wax:
repositions easily
plenty of time to work on your piece
smooth finished edges
no rippling paper
kinda of like encaustic without the hot wax and torch
works on papers and fabric
+
buffs out to a lovely luster once it's dried
(I love this most of all).

It does take a day or two to dry to the touch and
a few weeks more to dry completely.
I did buff the below piece the next day and it worked beautifully.

Take a moment (or 13:42) and check out my video
on playing with cold wax...
it explains more.

I really enjoyed this medium and will be adding it to my arsenal of art tools.
How about you...have you tried it, do you have any tricks to share?

  1. What a fantastic video and post!! I have been so intrigued by encaustic but a little afraid of the torching bit. This looks like a wonderful alternative. Thank you so much for sharing with us!!

    1. I felt the same way Jennalee...a little afraid of encaustic, though now I'm feeling a little bold after cold wax and might give it a try! I'm so glad you enjoyed the post and video, thank you for saying so...much appreciated.

  2. That looks great - less curling of paper and it looks like it will hold heavy pieces, too. I saw an article today about adding texture to cold wax using stamps. I think it was on Cloth Paper Scissors, if you want to look that up. I'm going to have to try this!

    1. Thanks Val for the tip on cold wax and stamps...I'll look it up. I do love that paper doesn't wrinkle and curl...and the shine as you know is my favorite. Glad you'll give it a try, and thanks so much for sharing the info on Cloth Paper Scissors...and commenting here about it. Enjoy!
