What's Underneath
That is what we've been up to in class this week...adding layer, upon layer, upon layer...with a few more layers for good measure! This has been so fun and freeing for me...and hopefully, for my class! We started out with four different pieces of 12x12 watercolor paper, with just one layer of papers covering each of them...followed up with 5 more steps, each containing 3 or four more layers to add into the mix...there is a total of 15 or more layers counting mark making, sealing, sanding and more layering.
The trick here...letting go of all the wonderful papers and marks that were laid down in each layer...this can be really hard to do! Yet we will be doing just that this coming week...we'll start finding our focus through negative painting over top of all these layers. This is one of my very favorite ways to paint. It gives you time to play and explore and let your painting reveal itself to you. All those layers that lay beneath create a wonderul richness and history to our paintings, leaving pieces of layers peeking through to tell part of the story.
I did two quick videos on starting to find the focus this week while working on two of my pieces, you can check them both out on my YouTube channel by clicking here...
If you're short on time you can watch one here in a smaller format.
I love how the layers here started out, especially the envelope with the windows, which I did ended up painting over...
Though it kept going and going, layer after layer...
Just a few more layers ought to do it...
Ending up here...waiting for the next steps in defining This piece.
There is more to to be revealed this week coming up,
when we start to clarify the focus and subjects
over all those layers.
I can't wait to see what students come up with...
I love what they've been doing so far!
I wrote a long post and then google lost it. In a word, these all look great! ❤️
