Anatomy of a Mural, week one...

I was recently commissioned to do a mural
by new homeowners
who wanted to add memories of their
600 acre Colorado ranch into their new home in
Rancho Santa Fe California.

We started with a 22 foot wall,
a scale drawing and lots of paint and brushes.

Life of a stencil...

is my go to stencil resource.

#1
because they have a wonderful selection of stencils

#2
They're local here in San Diego and close enough to get to
when I need a stencil right away.

Just a chair...

This is a chair
I worked on after finishing up the closet doors for Rita.

She just had this chair delivered,
gorgeous fabric,
but the wood painted gold metallic just wasn't right.

Working with Modello...

At first...
when my client Rita wanted me to do an elaborate design
on these closet doors,
in a room that already had so much design details...
I hesitated!

"Are you sure you want that much going on in here?"
I said.

"Yes, I like pattern on pattern,"
Rita said.

Lucky me...

I am very lucky it seems...
in all my years (and it's been quite a few)
I've had mostly wonderful jobs and clients to go right along with them.
It's been a very, very rare case when I had a client I didn't like!

This week was a fine example!

Lesson learned...

I just bought this piece from another dealer...
and spent way more than I normally would on a piece of furniture!
Especially since I would have to repair & paint
to get it ready to go into my shop at

A peek at a few new pieces...

I was busy Monday painting a few new pieces
I need to get out of the work space for a few more to come in...

Paint Magic with Fireplaces...

Cement cast fireplaces...
in so many homes,
and people just aren't sure what to do with them!

I say...paint em out!

Stormy (pastel) weather...

Cloudy weather?

I don't think so with this room!
Helping my friend & client get the guest room ready for three young ladies,
who will be calling it their vacation room at the beach.

Back at it...

Seems like forever since I've posted about a piece of furniture...
let alone painting it!

This little cabinet is apropos to post about on this day of love...
Valentines day
with it's somewhat large heart knobs!

Hideaway Beach

We turned our snorkel gear in on Thursday after the weather man said it would be raining the rest of the week...only to wake up to a beautiful Friday...I hate it when that happens!

So after enjoying a quiet breakfast on the lanai...we contemplated our day and headed off for a walk.

We came across Hideaway Beach...wayyyy down there!

It was too beautiful not to investigate...

...even if it meant making it down this very steep, slippery, narrow....did I say steep...rustic clay stairway.

As we made our way down this was our view...incredible! We saw sea turtles down there!

Can you see this very large school of fish?

We both decided we needed our snorkel gear back...

...so headed back up that "even steeper going up" stairway to get one more snorkel session in!

That is after Jimmy catches his breath!

Rainy Kauai Hawaii

We knew planning a trip in the rainiest month, to the rainiest island, on the rainiest part of the island...would be risky. Our first confirmation that we were right was landing in Honolulu for our connecting flight to Kauai.

Cloudy skies and big stormy waves make it clear there will be no snorkeling going on here...

We can only look out and enjoy the beauty of the north shore...

...and check out some of the other local delights.

How about this cool little Hawaiian snail...

...and water lillies

...and the wild chickens and roosters that are everywhere!

At least we have a great full 2 bedroom/2bath condo to hang out in...

...with beautiful tropical views.

We decided this morning though, to head down to Waimea on the west shore for the next 2 days and nights...because that's where the sun and snorkeling is!

I hope to post sunnier photos and thoughts from there...but don't get me wrong...even a rainy day is a good day in Kauai! And the R&R is deeeelightful!

Aloha

A shadow of my former self...

2014
has been off to a busy, yet slow start.

Busy because...
until this last Tuesday (January 21)  I'd been working in LA
in the CMA show room getting them ready for the
Gift and Home Show that is going on right now.

Slow because...
I'd been up there since before Christmas
and working out of town takes me out of my regular routine
and how I live and work here in Encinitas.
